The Mets drafted third baseman Nick Giarraputo out of Simi Valley High School in the 12th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. Giarraputo sat down for a Q&A session to give some insight into his game, what his strengths and weaknesses are, whether or not he plans on signing, and more.

\
InsidePitchMagazine.com: Congratulations on being drafted. Tell us what it feels like to be a New York Met.

\
Nick Giarraputo: I feel great. It\'s an unbelievable feeling right now. It\'s kind of crazy and I can\'t really even describe it. Tuesday was insane, just following the draft and watching the rounds go by.

\
Inside Pitch: Talk about your game. What type of player do you see yourself as and how you can fit it with the Mets?

\
Giarraputo: Right now I\'m more of a power guy. I hit from gap to gap with decent power. I\'m also a big guy at 6 feet 4 inches. I have some agility for my size and I think I bring a lot to the table.

\
Inside Pitch: What are your strengths and weaknesses?

\
Giarraputo: Right now my biggest strength is my hitting and power. As I said I\'m gap to gap with my power. I think I\'ll be able to hold my own against the minor league pitching when I get there. Right now my biggest weakness is my foot speed. I really need to work on getting that extra step that will help me out of the box and with my range at third.

\
Inside Pitch: Who would you compare yourself to as a baseball player?

\
Giarraputo: I wouldn\'t really compare myself to any certain baseball player. I have always been a Yankees fan so I guess my favorite player who I try to emulate is Derek Jeter. Just the way he goes about playing the game and how he carries himself on the field. I really respect him as a baseball player.

\
Inside Pitch: Were you expected to be drafted by the Mets or were you surprised when they selected you?

\
Giarraputo: I had been in contact with the Mets and so I was paying close attention to their picks every round. I was told I would be drafted right around the tenth round. When I saw the Mets had drafted me I was really happy but not surprised. It was a great feeling though.

\
Inside Pitch: Do you see yourself staying at third or changing positions?

\
Giarraputo: Right now I am at third but I know the Mets have David Wright up at the major league level. I don\'t see myself changing positions anytime soon though. So we\'ll see what happens, but right now I am still a third baseman.

\
Inside Pitch: What would you say is your best baseball moment and why?

\
Giarraputo: Before Tuesday it was winning the CIS championship my sophomore year at Simi Valley High School. I got play in Dodger Stadium, which was an incredible experience. But yesterday [Tuesday] is now my greatest baseball experience. Just being with my Dad and watching my name pop up on the computer screen.

\
Inside Pitch: What are your plans for right now? Do you plan on signing now and starting your professional career immediately?

\
Giarraputo: I want to sign as soon as possible and start my career with the Mets. I hope we can get it done within the next week but we\'ll see. If not, I do have a commitment to play at Cypress Junior College, but hopefully I can sign.

\
Inside Pitch: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your family?

\
Giarraputo: I consider myself a hard worker and a tough guy. But I\'m also really down to earth and don\'t get overwhelmed by certain things. I live with my Dad here in Simi Valley and we are big on baseball in our family. Our family is all about baseball.

\
Inside Pitch: Tell us about your experience as a baseball player at Simi High School?

\
Giarraputo: Playing here was the greatest four years of my life. Playing under Coach Labelle and learning from him was an unbelievable experience. He\'s a tremendous coach that has taught me so much about the game of baseball.

\
Inside Pitch: What are your plans for the summer if you don\'t sign immediately?

\
Giarraputo: Right now I am going to play for a Connie Mack team until I sign and if for some reason I don\'t sign, I\'ll be starting at Cypress this August.\

Major League Baseball held its amateur draft this week, making many high school and college players\' dreams come true.

\
One of the players drafted was Nick Giarraputo of Simi Valley High School. Giarraputo was chosen by the New York Mets in the 12th round with the 364th pick overall.

\
Giarraputo had a great season for Simi Valley in 2006, as he fell just 16 points short of the school\'s batting record by hitting .446. He also clubbed seven home runs and had 35 RBI.

\
\"He was watching the Major League Baseball draft tracker and saw his name come up as being drafted by the Mets,\" Simi Valley head coach Matt LaBelle said. \"A couple minutes after that he got a call from the Mets and then he called me.\"

\
It\'s not known whether Giarraputo will sign with the Mets or go to college, but according to LaBelle, the Mets would have to make Giarraputo an offer and whether or not he takes that offer is up in the air.

\
\"This is great for Nick as he worked so hard to earn this and has been a great team player for me ever since I started coaching this team three years ago,\" LaBelle said.

\
One of the ways Giarraputo helped his team was by playing different positions.

\
Giarraputo played a little second base for the Pioneers this past season and pitched as well. Giarraputo first season pitching for Simi Valley was solid. He went 7-3 with an earned run average of only 1.94.

\
One of Giarraputo\'s rivals from Royal High School, Kevin Harrington, was also picked in the draft only two selections later by the Minnesota Twins.

\
Harrington was drafted as a center fielder with the 366th pick.

\
Another high school player selected from the area was Daniel Berlind from Calabasas. Berlind went to the Chicago Cubs with pick No. 1,317.\

As he walked out of a crowded ballroom at the Wyndham Hotel in Albuquerque, N.M., on Tuesday afternoon, Devin Shepherd reached for his sunglasses.

\
Having just been drafted in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Minnesota Twins with the 156th pick overall, the Oxnard High senior outfielder was overcome with mixed emotions.

\
\"I had to put on my shades, take a deep breath and reflect on things because there were a lot of tears coming out,\" said 6-foot-3, 225-pound Shepherd, who is in New Mexico for the Playstation All-American game. \"I was crying for happiness and for sadness. I was very grateful God blessed me to be drafted, but I was a little disappointed because I thought I would go higher.\"

\
Shepherd was the first of eight players with Ventura County ties selected through the first 18 rounds of the draft, which culminates today.

\
Cal State Fullerton pitcher Ryan Paul has become a veteran of the draft process. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound left-hander was chosen for the fourth time on Tuesday when the San Francisco Giants picked him in the 10th round with the 296th pick.

\
Paul was drafted by the Atlanta Braves out of Moorpark High in 2002 (42nd round) and by the New York Mets (2004, 47th round) and Detroit Tigers (2005, 28th round) while attending L.A. Pierce College.

\
\"The first time was by far the most exciting,\" said Paul, who was practicing for Fullerton\'s Super Regional series against Missouri when he found out he was selected. \"This one was more of a \'This is the real deal\' thing. This one had expectations with it. But it is always an honor having your name called.\"

\
Being a part of the Giants organization will test the loyalties of Paul, a die-hard Los Angeles Dodgers fan.

\
\"It is a little ironic,\" he said. \"But you know what, they liked me more than the Dodgers did, so I have no problem with that.\"

\
One year after being drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round, Ventura College pitcher Jacob Renshaw improved his status. The sophomore right-hander was taken by the Chicago Cubs in the 10th round with the 299th pick.

\
\"It feels great to be considered as one of the top 300 players in the country,\" the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Renshaw said. \"I am ready to get going. I just want to start my path to the big leagues. That is my goal.\"

\
A pair of Simi Valley buddies were drafted just two picks apart in the 12th round. The Mets selected Simi Valley High third baseman Nick Giarraputo with the 364th pick and the Twins took Royal High center fielder Kevin Harrington with the 366th pick.

\
\"I was freaking out the whole day. I can\'t even describe it,\" said Giarraputo, who wants to sign a contract with the Mets and begin a minor-league career. \"My dad and I were watching on the Internet, and when they called my name I looked at him and said \'I just got drafted,\' and he jumped up from the couch and we hugged each other. It was crazy.\"

\
Three collegiate middle infielders rounded out Ventura County\'s first-day draft class.

\
Arizona senior second baseman Brad Boyer, a Camarillo High graduate, was selected by the Giants in the 13th round with the 386th pick, Mississippi Valley State junior shortstop Zach Penprase, a Moorpark High graduate, was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 397th pick in the 13th round, and USC senior Blake Sharpe, a Moorpark High graduate, was taken by the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 477th pick in the 16th round.

\
Shepherd has committed to play at Oklahoma, but he won\'t decide on his next step until negotiating with the Twins.

\
\"Everybody has to walk out feeling like they are going to get a good deal,\" Shepherd said. \"I don\'t want to hold out or anything. I want to get out there as soon as possible. The Twins promote young players to the big leagues very quickly, so I could see myself going through in two or three years.\"

\
Although he wanted it to happen a few rounds earlier, Shepherd still enjoyed the sensation of having his name called.

\
\"It sends chills throughout your whole body,\" he said. \"It\'s something I have never experienced before. It\'s a rush I wish I could get more often.\"

\

Despite all the adversity faced this year by the Simi Valley baseball team, the Pioneers had played well enough to earn themselves a shot at the CIF Div. I playoffs.

\
Going into Wednesday\'s game against Moorpark, the Pioneers were tied with Westlake and Calabasas for the fourth and final Marmonte League playoff spot. Win-and it\'s likely they get in-lose, and they were out.

\
Unfortunately, for the young Simi Valley squad, it was the latter.

\
Senior ace Nick Giarraputo, pitching his final game in a Pioneer uniform, was tagged for three runs in the fourth inning as Moorpark came from behind to defeat SVHS, 4-2.

\
Simi Valley, which registered an admirable eight hits on the day, left the bases loaded in the third and fourth innings, and was unable to manage a single hit through the final three frames against Moorpark reliever Mitchell Rudebusch. The Pioneers stranded eight base runners in all.

\
Simi ends the season with an overall record of 16-11 and 6-8 in league. It\'s the second-straight year the club has missed the playoffs since winning it all in 2004.

\
Head coach Matt La Belle, reflecting on what had been an emotionally-trying season for the team, praised his players for never giving in, and never getting away from the team concept.

\
\"I couldn\'t be more proud of our guys. We were hit with the kind of situations that usually only happen once every five to 10 years-and we had four of them,\" La Belle said. \"All the young guys stepped up and came together as a team well.\"

\
If any thing good came out of this tumultuous season, La Belle said, it\'s the fact that so many young Simi players got the opportunity to get through their growing pains on the diamond - a fact that bodes very well for next season.

\
\"Of all the negative things that happened in our program this year, that\'s the one glaring positive: those guys got the opportunity to step up and play on this level,\" La Belle said.

\
In all, Simi Valley will return eight players in 2007 that were in the lineup everyday this season, including every member of their quickly blossoming infield: shortstop Matt Orloff, second baseman Andrew Sandler, third baseman Eric Bernstein and first baseman Jeff Fogerson. Orloff is a sophomore while Sandler and Bernstein are freshmen.

\
\"They got a full year of growing up time and now they\'re starting to fit into their roles. Next year all the jitters are going to be gone . . . we\'re going to be very good,\" La Belle said determinedly.

\
Simi Valley does say goodbye to five quality seniors: Matt Hibbard, Frankie Reed, Chris Stantzos, Matt McFadden and Giarraputo.

\
The multi-talented Giarraputo, who single-handedly led the team both on the mound and at the plate, will be missed most of all. He is the final player remaining who was part of Simi\'s 2004 CIF championship winning team.

\
La Belle couldn\'t say enough about the departing senior, who volunteered to pitch this season when two of Simi\'s best arms were suspended from the team.

\
\"He stepped up, and not only that, he dominated on the mound,\" La Belle said.

\
Giarraputo, who could be selected in this year\'s MLB draft, led the team in hits (37), runs (27), RBI (35) and home runs (7). He also posted a 7-3 record on the mound with a 1.94 ERA.\

\"Russo I think threw the ball fantastic,\" LaBelle said. \"We made way too many errors behind him, which we haven\'t been doing. I was happy to see him throw real well again.

\
\"We\'re hitting the ball well. We\'re having good approaches. We hit the ball real hard,\" the coach said. \"We just kind of hit it right at people a couple two many times. They hit the ball very well and (freshman pitcher) Drew Sandler has thrown the ball exceptionally well for us all year. They hit pretty good pitches and it happens.\"

\
In their game earlier in the season, the host Pioneers nipped the Chargers, 5-4, as Giarraputo pitched 6 2/3 innings and hit a grand slam and Reed finished the game for Simi Valley.

\
LaBelle said three sophomores-shortstop Matt Orloff, Hale and Russo-as well as Sandler are making a major contribution to this year\'s team.

\
\"We have a whole bunch of sophomores and a freshman that are playing in the lineup everyday and they are doing a fantastic job,\" the coach said. \"They\'ve been asked and demanded to step it up and be varsity players before typically guys are varsity players, and they have done that to a tee.\"\

Giarraputo gave up just two hits en route to a complete game victory-his seventh win of the season. Today the Pioneers are at home against Royal.">\
Most pitchers will tell you - they\'re only as good as the defense behind them.

\
Simi Valley ace Nick Giarraputo found that out the hard way in his team\'s 9-2 loss to Westlake earlier in the season, when five Pioneer errors led to six runs off the right-hander, only one of them earned.

\
On Wednesday, Giarraputo (7-2) and the ever-improving Simi defense got their revenge thanks to another solid outing from the senior pitcher and some stellar plays in the field, limiting the Warriors to just two hits in a 5-1 road win.

\
The victory, Simi\'s 14th of the season, pulled the Pioneers into a second-place tie in the Marmonte League standings with Agoura, who was upset by seventh-place Moorpark the same day.

\
Giarraputo, who also added a two-run home run in the fifth, his team-leading seventh of the season, admitted the memory of his team\'s earlier defeat was fresh in his mind.

\
\"Oh yeah, it was a big factor,\" said Giarraputo, who logged his third complete game of the season. \"The last time I thought I threw a good game but the plays just didn\'t go our way. This time I had confidence in our infield and in the players behind me and I just did the same thing and we got the win.\"

\
    \
The Pioneers got on the scoreboard early thanks to a second-inning home run by junior outfielder Jordon Flores, who took Westlake starter Jake Fiss deep over the left-field fence with Jake Reed and Andrew Sandler aboard. It proved to be all the offense the Pioneers would need.

\
Sophomore shortstop Matt Orloff made a diving stop in the second inning and Sandler, playing second base, added a sensational catch of his own in the sixth, robbing Westlake\'s best hitter, Stephen Notaro, of a sure RBI. Both were clear signs that Simi\'s young infield, which had only one error in the game, has come a long way since opening day.

\
\"Every week we\'re progressing, and it showed big time today,\" said a grateful Giarraputo, whose ERA coming into the game was a miniscule 1.24.

\
Today, Simi Valley (14-8, 64) is at home against rival Royal (8-10, 1-9), a last-place team which would like nothing more than to knock off the Pioneers. Giarraputo said it\'s critical for his teammates not to look past the Highlanders to Wednesday\'s matchup with Agoura, something they did early in the season against Calabasas.

\
\"We went in taking Calabasas lightly, and look what happened,\" Giarraputo said. \"We know anything can happen in this league and we can\'t afford not to play our best baseball.

\
\"Royal\'s down right now and they have nothing to lose. All they\'re trying to do is wreck everyone\'s season, especially Simi\'s,\" Giarraputo added. \"We need to come out and bang them, take care of business, and go into Wednesday\'s game with a chance to takeover second place."\

Closers are a breed apart in high school baseball.

\
Late-inning pitching changes are usually reserved for either reserves filling a mop-up role or one of a team\'s starters working one or two innings in a tight game.

\
Rare is the case that a pitcher specifically designated as a closer stands out in a crowd.

\
Even rarer is the relief specialist who excels for two or more seasons.

\
The category of saves is often overlooked for section and state season and career statistical lists.

\
Ventura County has had its share of outstanding relievers over the past half-dozen years.

\
Moorpark\'s Dan Bascom (eight) and Bryan Garcia (seven) were the save leaders in the 2002 and 2003 seasons, respectively.

\
St. Bonaventure\'s Jack Swisher ranks as the county career leader with 14 saves.

\
Dylan Gaughen saved 12 games over three seasons with Simi Valley.

\
His bullpen successor, Frankie Reed, has 12 career saves for the Pioneers, including six this spring.

\
Over the past five seasons, Simi Valley closers have saved 28 games.

\
Close Marmonte League games and a close watch on pitch counts of his starting pitchers were reasons enough for Simi Valley coach Matt LaBelle to cultivate relievers.

\
\"I am cautious with pitch counts,\" said LaBelle.

\
Starters are limited to an average of 80-90 pitches per game.

\
\"I might go as high as 95, but never over 100,\" he said.

\
The pitch-count limitations made the role of closer important to the program\'s success.

\
To LaBelle, closer candidates \"must have a dominating attitude and must be willing to take a loss and come back the next time.\"

\
In Reed, Labelle found a closer with the right mental approach.

\
And it didn\'t hurt that Reed had the physical tools as well.

\
His fastball is in the 80-90 miles-per-hour range. His menu of pitches include a changeup and slider.

\
Reed\'s control of the strike zone is brilliant, according to LaBelle. The lefty averages 2 - 2 1/2 strikes for every ball outside the plate.

\
\"Frankie can really attack the strike zone,\" said LaBelle.

\
Reed is just not the team\'s closer. He\'s an everyday outfielder, averaging .313 as a hitter.

\
Late in games, LaBelle has pulled Reed out the field to warm up in the bullpen.

\
While Reed has been given opportunities to start for Simi Valley, he\'s aware of his value as a reliever.

\
\"He would rather pitch in a game when it matters,\" said LaBelle.\

\
Nick Giarraputo had, oh, five minutes to digest the news. With a matchup against Los Angeles City powerhouse Chatsworth looming in the Southern California Showdown, Giarraputo would be the starting pitcher for the Simi Valley High baseball team.

\
No matter that Giarraputo had pitched only occasionally during summer preparations as he focused on his duties as an infielder. No matter that Giarraputo\'s performance against Chatsworth marked his first pitching start in three years on the Simi Valley varsity.

\
The senior right-hander unlimbered his arm, yielded one run in the first, then pitched six consecutive scoreless innings in throwing a complete game in Simi Valley\'s 1-0 defeat.

\
\"Whatever my team needs me to do, that\'s what I will do,\" says Giarraputo. \"Whether it\'s pitching or playing second base or whatever, all I care about is winning.\"

\
Giarraputo\'s team-first attitude looms precious for Simi Valley and coach Matt LaBelle this season.

\
Just two weeks into the season, the Pioneers\' roster was remade when LaBelle opted to suspend five players for what he says was the violation of a team rule at a team function. Among those players who will sit out the remainder of the season is ace pitcher Nick Barnesse.

\
All of which means that Giarraputo\'s load just got heavier.

\
Having already made the switch from third base to second base for the betterment of the lineup, Giarraputo now must assume a role as one of the Pioneers\' starting pitchers.

\
        \
The 6-foot-5, 200-pound senior doesn\'t appear troubled by the added workload or expectations. Almost Gary Cooper-like, he\'s happy to amble out for a showdown at High Noon.

\
\"I like pitching,\" he said with a smile. \"I\'m going to have fun with it. I\'m going to have fun this season. To me, it\'s all about giving my team the best chance to win games.\"

\
LaBelle appreciates the unselfishness, particularly from a three-year starter and the only remaining player from Simi Valley\'s CIF-SS Division II championship squad in 2004.

\
\"He\'s my guy,\" said LaBelle. \"He doesn\'t care about anything but the team. You can\'t win without great leadership. He gives us that.\"

\
Giarraputo\'s impact proved large in the opening week of the Marmonte League season.

\
In the league opener against Thousand Oaks, Giarraputo sparked the 3-1 victory in allowing one run and four hits in six innings on the mound, and swatting a two-run in the seventh for the winning margin.

\
In Simi Valley\'s 5-4 loss to Newbury Park on Friday, Giarraputo played second base and was 3 for 3 with a double.

\
        \
Giarraputo is seeking a happy storyline to a high school career that includes starting at third base on the program\'s only CIF-Southern Section champion. The memories of 2004 are as glittery as his championship ring.

\
\"Great memories,\" he said. \"When we got into the playoffs, we had the feeling that we couldn\'t lose. We always felt that something good was going to happen to us. Someone was always going to step up.\"

\
As a sophomore starter, Giarraputo learned how to be a leader from upperclassmen like catcher Bryan Anderson.

\
Now it\'s Giarraputo turn as the unquestioned leader of the 2006 Pioneers.

\
\"Bryan was a good role model,\" said Giarraputo. \"He set a great example by practicing hard and putting the team above himself. That\'s what I want to do, too.\"

\
Among Giarraputo\'s challenges this season is moving from third base to second base. At 6-5, he\'s one of the bigger second baseman in any lineup.

\
\"Everything\'s different for me as a senior,\" he said. \"The three years have gone by so fast. I just want to make the most of my last year. We can be a very good team. I just want to do my part.\"\

Simi Valley High\'s baseball roster looks far different than it did a year ago. The Pioneers are hoping the results can be a lot different, too.

\
Simi Valley was 11-3 in nonleague play last season, but slid to finish seventh in the Marmonte League just a season after winning the Southern Section Div. II title. With just five players who have previous varsity experience, the Pioneers are off to another impressive start this season and are looking to make it hold up now that Marmonte play has begun.

\
Simi Valley improved to 5-1 by defeating Thousand Oaks 3-1 in Wednesday\'s league opener. The Pioneers\' lone loss was 1-0 to nationally ranked Chatsworth last week in the quarterfinals of the Easton Southern California Showdown.

\
Simi Valley\'s few veterans has are playing key roles.

\
Senior infielder Nick Giarraputo, who had pitched sparingly previously, has emerged as a leader on the mound and at the plate. He gained his second win Wednesday, throwing six innings and hitting a game-winning, two-run home run.

\
Senior left-hander Frankie Reed already is more than halfway to his school-record save total (7) from last season. He recorded his fourth save Wednesday.

\
Reed and Giarraputo hit grand slams Monday as Simi Valley defeated Alemany of Mission Hills 14-13 in the fifth-place game of the Easton tournament.

\
The Pioneers face a big test today at home against Newbury Park (3-1). The Panthers, with newcomer Andrew Lambo hitting his fifth home run in four games, are coming off a 7-4 victory over Westlake.

\

Overview: The 2004 CIF Division II champion Pioneers fell on hard times a year ago, finishing 16-12 overall and just 5-9 in the Marmonte. La Belle, however, has his squad headed in the right direction, and according to several coaches in the league, Simi Valley could be the surprise team of \'06. Early preseason wins over Hart and Canyon should give the Pioneers positive momentum heading into league play.

\
Simi\'s rotation is solid with Nick Barnese as the ace of the staff and southpaw Nick Russo serving as the No. 2 starter. Senior Frankie Reed will work as the team\'s closer once again.

\
Catcher Jake Reed is in charge of handling the Pioneer pitching staff. Jake Reed replaces Bryan Anderson, who\'s now playing for the St. Louis Cardinals\' organization. Jeff Forgerson and basketball/football standout Collin Franklin will battle for time at first base. The 6-foot-5 Franklin will also see some action in the outfield.

\
Nick Giarraputo moves from third base to second base. At 6-foot4, 205 pounds, Giarraputo will surely be the biggest second baseman in the league, and perhaps the county. Sophomore Matt Orloff takes over for his brother Ben at shortstop. The elder Orloff now plays at UC Irvine. Aaron Pelone will work the hot corner.

\
Senior Matt McFadden, the Pioneer leadoff hitter, can play both center and left fields. Brett Hale is expected to patrol right field. Junior outfielder Jordan Flores is a transfer from Royal High. Simi\'s remaining roster consists of Matt Hibbard, Brandon Garza, Chris Stantzos, Eric Bernstein and Andrew Majorski. Head coach Matt La Belle says: \"We\'ve worked real hard on doing the little things right-moving guys over and situational hitting-and our guys have really bought into that, which we didn\'t do a great job of last year.\"\
