Will the Patriots make it three straight Super Bowl titles? Throughout Little League and high school, Bryan Anderson always awoke each morning wanting to head straight to the baseball field.

\
The everyday stuff in between was just a diversion until he could slide into his catching gear or take a few cuts in the batter\'s box.

\
So when Anderson began his professional career last month by reporting to the rookie-level Johnson City (Tenn.) Cardinals, the recent Simi Valley High graduate felt like he was in heaven.

\
\"It\'s the life,\" he said. \"I am getting paid to just play baseball every day. What could be better?\"

\
Anderson needed only a few swings to regain the form that made him the best prep player in the county last year.

\
In his first minor league at-bat while pinch hitting, he singled a fastball up the middle.

\
A few weeks ago, he belted his first home run by driving a ball deep down the right-field line with his grandparents sitting in the stands.

\
\"It was awesome,\" said Anderson, who was batting .275 with seven RBIs through 24 games. \"It was raining really hard and I got a good pitch to hit and hit it pretty hard. I gave my grandparents the ball to take back home.\"

\
As much as Anderson loves playing every day, it can take a toll on a catcher\'s body. The 6-foot, 190-pounder has already accumulated his share of bumps and bruises, and is heeding the advice of his coaches on how to conserve energy.

\
\"They tell me to eat right and eat as much as I can so I don\'t get tired,\" Anderson said. \"It\'s kind of hard when you are at the field from 3 to 11 at night, but I try to get like three meals a day. I really like fast food, but I am trying to get some good stuff in me.\"

\
Anderson has discovered there are a few differences in handling a minor league pitching staff as opposed to the pitchers at Simi Valley.

\
\"It is really harder than high school,\" he said. \"They throw harder here, and have a lot more movement. But I am adjusting fine.\"

\
While he hasn\'t taken any long bus rides yet, Anderson\'s living quarters resemble the stereotypical life of a minor leaguer. He is bunking at a Residence Inn with teammate Colby Rasmus. \"It is a bed to sleep in,\" Anderson said.

\
One that Anderson wakes up in each morning with the same eagerness to get on the field that he\'s had since Little League.

\

The Arkansas Travelers (17-15, 51-51) turned four double plays while 1B Kendry Morales knocked home the go-ahead run in a 6-5 victory over the Springfield Cardinals (14-16, 49-52). Morales\’ single knocked in Mike Napoli in the seventh inning for his first RBI against Springfield to put the Travs ahead for good. Springfield had their chances with the tying or go-ahead run on base in each of the last five innings. However, the Travs turned a double play in each of the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Winning pitcher RHP David Austen (2-1) entered the game in the sixth inning with the game tied at 5-5 and runners at the corners. He induced a double play and eventually had another twin killing turned behind him in the seventh inning. Alex Serrano came on in the eighth with a one-run lead and the bases loaded with one out. He got Shaun Boyd to bounce to the mound for another double play. Serrano pitched through the ninth for his fifth Travs save (9th overall in the Texas League).

\
Travs RHP Jered Weaver pitched just four innings in his Class AA debut allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Old-fashioned pitchers\' duels are about as scarce in the California League as a cool July day in San Bernardino.

\
But Thursday, in what appeared to be a one-sided pitching matchup, Chad Fillinger of the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino matched the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes\' Jered Weaver pitch for pitch for seven innings.

\
That is until the Quakes pushed across a run on a fielder\'s choice in the eighth inning, squeezing out a 1-0 victory over the Sixers before 2,731 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

\
It was the first shutout of the season for the Quakes (15-12 second half, 43-53 overall). The Sixers (9-17, 37-59) have lost seven of their last eight home games, and lost a home game to the Quakes for the first time this season.

\
Weaver (4-1) seems to be getting stronger with each start, and this was his best yet, holding the Sixers to one hit and two walks while striking out 10 in seven innings.

\
\"It just takes some repetition,\" Weaver said of his improvement. \"I didn\'t feel so good warming up in the bullpen, (but) they had some tough lefties and I was able to use my changeup.\"

\
Said Quakes manager Ty Boykin: \"Every start, he gets better and better. His tempo\'s been good.\"

\

It was a tough no-decision for Fillinger, who pitched two-hit ball for seven innings, striking out nine and walking none. Fillinger took a no-hitter into the fifth before Ben Johnson broke it up with a two-out bloop single to center. He was making his third start for the Sixers after being recalled from low Class-A Wisconsin, where he was an all-star reliever.\

Tales of a Wayside Inn, The Student\'s Tale

\
LAKE ELSINORE - At times as clunky as the famous American poet\'s proverb, Jered Weaver made his long-awaited professional debut Monday night for the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in a High Class-A minor league game vs. the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond.

\
Three weeks after ending his year-long holdout, Weaver appeared in a game for the first time since June 2004. The Angels\' first-round draft pick a year ago pitched three innings, allowing three hits, two walks, and one run while striking out four. He faced 14 batters and exceeded his 50-pitch limit by two (throwing 32 for strikes).

\
Although Weaver struggled in the second inning, he simply overpowered the Storm in the other two innings. Jered struck out George Kottaras and Jordan Pickens, the number three and four hitters in the Storm lineup, in the first and third frames. Kottaras, who slugged a game-winning, two-run home run in the seventh inning, appeared overmatched by Weaver\'s heat the first time around and various breaking balls the next time when he was called out attempting to check his swing. Weaver K\'d Pickens twice on a total of seven pitches, including a slow curve to end the first and a sidearm fastball for the second out of his third and final inning of the evening.

\
In addition to punching out four batters, Weaver induced two comebackers which he fielded skillfully, two fly outs, and a pop out to the third baseman. The three hits allowed were all singles, including a broken-bat blooper to right by Fernando Valenzuela, Jr. The son of the 1981 National League Rookie of the Year later scored from third base on a single that fell just in front of right fielder Ben Johnson, who threw a perfect one-hopper to home that beat the stocky first baseman by a country mile but was mishandled by catcher Timothy Duff for what turned out to be the only run scored against Weaver.

\

\

\
        Photos by Tom Lederer

\
At 6-foot-7 and 210 pounds, Weaver was an imposing figure on the mound. Jered reminded me of A.J. Burnett in terms of the number on the back of his sleeveless road gray jersey, the blond hair, high dark socks, big turn, long stride, and stiff leg finish. Although not reaching the high-90s like the Florida Marlins hurler, Weaver\'s fastball was clocked at 92 mph in the first inning and generally sat between 89-91. He also mixed in a slider, curve balls of varying speed, and a changeup.

\
After signing with the independent Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League last month, Weaver threw in the bullpen but never appeared in a game. While in New Jersey and awaiting his first outing, the 2004 College Player of the Year finally agreed to a $4 million bonus--the seventh-largest in draft history--with the Los Angeles Angels, hours prior to the deadline on May 30. The product of Simi Valley High School and Long Beach State then reported to Rancho Cucamonga on June 11, exactly one year after his final college game (a seven-inning, 12-strikeout no-decision vs. Arizona in the NCAA Super Regionals at Blair Field in Long Beach).

\
The 22-year-old threw two simulated games before getting his first start in the pro ranks. As expected, Weaver was a bit rusty, but Jered left no doubt in the minds of the 2,085 fans in attendance that he has what it takes to pitch in the big leagues. It is only a question of when and not if. Let\'s face it, there have been skeptics at every stop along the way even though the two-time, first-team All-American has put up numbers as good as any college or Team USA pitcher in history.

\
Far from perfect, Weaver needs to work on quickening his delivery to home with runners on base. Lake Elsinore stole two bases against him although one was as much the fault of the catcher (who hesitated following a tipped strike) as Weaver. He may also benefit in due time by developing a sinker in addition to his two-seam fastball, which he uses to complement his more powerful four-seamer. That said, Weaver\'s stuff is plenty good enough as is and he undoubtedly has the command to succeed at the major league level, perhaps as early as next spring or summer.

\
Weaver is scheduled to make his next start on Saturday, June 25 when the Quakes host the Stockton Ports. His pitch limit is expected to rise to 75. Therefore, if all goes well, look for Jered to go five innings in his second start of the year. I\'ll be there once again to bring you the action.\
